On 9 February 2023, NXPO brought Thai public and private organizations to visit Forest Tech Thailand Company Limited to learn about biomass dry torrefaction technology. The study visit, led by Dr. Saravanee Singtong, Director of Sustainability Policy Division and Dr. Chalothorn Boonlua, Director of Strategic Policy Division, is part of NXPO’s effort to drive circular economy (CE) awareness and transformation in Thailand.
Torrefaction is a process in which biomass is thermally treated, reducing the content of volatile components. Torrefied biomass produced from this process is a high-grade solid biofuel. This torrefaction pilot plant has a production capacity of 3 tons/hr torrefied biomass with a heating value ranging from 4.8 to 5.5 kcal/kg. Torrefied product can be used to replace coal used in the production of electricity and energy. As torrefaction technology can turn any types of biomass, including agricultural byproducts, into coal substitutes, this process represents an innovative solution to CE and supports the climate action to achieve net zero emissions.
