NXPO convened the Executive Board Meeting on 21 June 2024. During the opening session, Ms. Supamas Isarabhakdi, Minister of of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI) and Board Chairperson, suggested the development of a plan and budget for the implementation of the Future Workforce for Future Industry initiative. This initiative focuses on developing high-skilled workforce to support the IGNITE THAILAND vision, which aims to position Thailand as a hub in key industries. In addition, MHESI will prioritize research and innovation and ensure that its work directly benefits the people.
Following the opening session, NXPO presented the workplan to promote the future food industry. In 2023, Thailand’s future food export was valued at THB 143 billion, accounting for 11% of total food export value, with 89% of future food exports being health foods and functional ingredients. The future food export value is projected to reach THB 220 billion in 2027. This indicates the potential of future food as a new economic driver. To guide the food industry in embracing this trend, NXPO, in collaboration with government agencies, industry, and academia, developed a strategic framework for the future food industry consisting of the following components: 1) building a research consortium through the program management units; 2) developing a platform for technology transfer and a one-stop service for market studies, production process development, pilot production, product testing and registration; 3) fostering business incubation centers focusing on food tech and biotech startups; and 4) upskilling the workforce through degree and non-degree programs.
In addition, a progress on human resource development supporting MHESI’s EV initiative was reported. Short courses are being offered by 51 vocation schools across the country under the higher education sandbox to upskill the current workforce, while tax and non-tax incentives are provided to enterprises to encourage employee development. A number of undergraduate and graduate programs are being developed through university-industry co-creation to support the transition of the Thai auto industry from gas-powered cars to electric vehicles.
