MHESI-NXPO welcomes Prime Minister’s Secretary-General for a policy discussion

On 5 March 2025, NXPO staff, led by President Dr. Surachai Sathitkunarat, welcomed Dr. Prommin Lertsuridej, Secretary-General to the Prime Minister, along with Ms. Teerapa Pirohakul, Deputy Secretary-General to the Prime Minister for Political Affairs, and their delegation. The meeting was also attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation (MHESI), including Ms. Suchada Thaensap, Secretary to the MHESI Minister, and Prof. Dr. Supachai Pathumnakul, Permanent Secretary of MHESI. The discussion focused on NXPO’s roles, missions, and implementation strategies.

Dr. Surachai provided an overview of Thailand’s higher education, science, research, and innovation system, highlighting the roles and responsibilities of the National Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation Policy Council (Policy Council) and NXPO as its secretariat. He also outlined key strategies and initiatives supporting national development, as follows:

  1. Economic Development – Strengthening Thailand’s existing industries while fostering emerging sectors such as future food, semiconductors, and electric vehicle (EV) conversion. Efforts include enhancing innovation capabilities of Thai enterprises to compete globally, developing research & innovation infrastructure and ecosystem, and promoting international cooperation.
  2. Social Development – Advancing skill development and higher education reform through initiatives such as tax incentives for workforce development under the Thailand Plus Package and academia-industry co-creation education programs.
  3. Environmental Sustainability – Accelerating Thailand’s carbon neutrality goals by piloting low-carbon cities, including the Saraburi Sandbox which aims for net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Saraburi province. Additionally, efforts include establishing a Net Zero GHG Emissions platform for universities.

During the discussion, Dr. Prommin provided recommendations and strategic directions for NXPO, ensuring alignment with government policies and maximizing the impact of higher education and science.
