The APEC Center for Technology Foresight (APEC CTF), hosted by NXPO, organized the APEC STI Strategic Foresight Workshop 2024: Net-zero Emissions on 23-25 January 2024, at Pago Design Hotel Phuket. The workshop was attended by representatives from nine APEC economies, namely Brunei Darussalam, People’s Republic of China, Chinese Taipei, Japan, Malaysia, Peru, Republic of Korea, Thailand, and the United States.
In his welcome remarks, NXPO President Dr. Kitipong Promwong stated that this workshop aimed to prepare APEC economies to address climate change and achieve the net-zero emission goal by 2050, as committed in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The event also played a key role in strengthening the network through an exchange of insights and best practices among APEC economies, as well as setting goals for collaboration and formulating recommendations for STI development.
This workshop is part of the self-funded APEC Science Technology and Innovation Strategic Foresight project (Project Number: PPSTI 05 2023S) approved by APEC’s Policy Partnership for Science, Technology, and Innovation (PPSTI), focusing on promoting science, technology, and innovation in the APEC region.
The three-day workshop covered key issues vital to the net zero emission target, namely energy demand management, energy transition, green economy, carbon emission sinks, and off-set policies.
Dr. Surachai Sathitkunarat, NXPO Vice President and APEC CTF Executive Director, highlighted the importance of employing foresight tools in analyzing those key issues. He also emphasized the significance of establishing a collaborative network within the APEC framework to drive STI advancement.
During the workshop, experts presented key initiatives and recommendations for STI collaborations to support APEC’s net zero emission endeavor.
The APEC STI Strategic Foresight Workshop 2024 was organized as a carbon-neutral event. Twenty-one tons of carbon dioxide equivalent generated during the workshop were offset by carbon credits of Mitr Phol Biomass Energy (Dang Chang) Project, using the “ZERO CARBON” application developed by Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization.
